Why does "Sixty Minutes" & SBS Cover Up War Crimes perpetrated by the West's Nazi/Islamist Terrorist allies in Israel & the Balkans?

Letter sent on Monday, May 15, 2006, to Messrs. Allan Hogan & Howard Sacre of the Australian version of CBS' "Sixty Minutes" and to the Australian "multicultural" version of the BBC,the SBS TV network.

Sir, I am an expatriate Jewish American currently residing in Perth, WA, Australia. I just viewed your tribute to the late Mr. Richard Carleton last night. For your information, my mother lost virtually her ENTIRE family to the Nazis in World War 2. It is very sad and depressing for me personally that Mr. Carleton has passed away without being able to rectify his extremely biased and misinformed portrayal & demonization of the Israelis & Serbs vis-a-vis the conflicts in the Middle East & Balkans while he was still alive.

Sir, why do you never mention the fact that the people who the Serbs and Israeli Jews are fighting to this very day are unrepentent mass murdering Nazis & Islamist terrorists who were publicly committed to Genocide of the Serbs & Jews BEFORE the "official" outbreak of war in their respective countries ?

Why is their no mention of the heinous crimes of the Bosnian Islamist Nazi warlord, Mr. Naser Oric, from April 1992 to August 1995 in and around villages adjoining Srebrenica & Gorazde? Mr. Oric received his specific instructions for these slaughters from Alija Izetbegovic - according to testimony under oath, by French UN general, Phillipe Morillon, at the ICTY Hague "war crimes tribunal". Mr. Oric's barbaric murders of Serbian women & children were rigorously documented in several UN reports and even PHOTGRAPHED & VIDEOTAPED by himself and shown to US & Canadian reporters while he LAUGHED as he watched his videos!! This monster cold bloodedly murdered - using the most hideously brutal methods over 3,870 innocent elderly Serbian men, women and even babies and children under 5 years of age, mostly by cutting throats and beheading, often preceded by the most horrific tortures including cutting off of limbs, lips, noses, ears, breasts, genitalia, burning of skin and gang rape. Yet you and your colleagues at Sixty Minutes have consistently FAILED to mention any of it in over 14 years of reporting. Why?

Similar crimes were perpetrated by the Croatian Ustasha Nazis against Serbs in Croatia from late 1990 onwards - soon after Mr. Franjo Tudjman came to power - and in the Serbian Krajina province which was cleansed of 275,000 to 350,000 Serbs by Messrs Franjo Tudjman, Ante Gotovina & Agim Ceku from August to November 1995 in the Clinton administration-backed massive ethnic cleansing operation known as "Operation Storm": the total number of Serbs cleansed from Croatia & the Krajina province being close to 600,000 from late 1990 to November 1995 with total Serbian CIVILIANS murdered estimated at 14,000 to 20,000 by independent Western observers (see the links below). Why is this never mentioned in any of your reports over the last 11 years?

Sir, were you aware that both Mr. Franjo Tudjman and Mr.Alija Izetbegovic are on record as saying & writing words to the effect that there can be NO peace or co-existence with the Serbs and Jews and that the Serbs should get the hell out of Bosnia, Croatia/Krajina or else be killed? Did you know similar statements were publicly made by Messrs. Agim Ceku, Ramush Haradinaj and Hashim Thaci concerning the Serbs and Jews in Kosovo: that they should leave or else be slaughtered?

Were you aware that both Messrs Franjo Tudjman and Alija Izetbegovic in the early 1990's BEFORE the outbreak of war in ex-Yugoslavia PUBLICLY admitted to their admiration of World War 2 Nazi leaders Adolph Hitler, Ante Pavelic and Haj Amin Al-Husseini and their Nazi genocidal policies with regards to the Serbs & Jews? Were you aware that the late Alija Izetbegovic was an auxiliary in the Bosnian Muslim Nazi SS "Handzar" ["Dagger" or "Scimitar"] division, and a member of the "Young Muslims" organization in Bosnia in early 1943 - said organization serving as a recruiting tool for this 20,000 strong Muslim Nazi SS division? Were you aware that there is absolutely no public record in the Western media of the late Franjo Tudjman's war time activities prior to his joining Tito's partisans in 1944?

Sir, were you aware that the late PLO leader Yasser Arafat was a close associate of the WW2 Islamist Arabic Nazi leader, and friend of Adolf Hitler, the Grand Mufti of Jerusalem, Haj Amin Al-Husseini? Were you aware that the leaders of the KLA, Messrs Agim Ceku,Ramush Haradinaj & Hashim Thaci, derive their ideology & guiding principles from the racist Nazi "Greater Albania" proponents of the WW2 Albanian "Skanderbeg" Nazi SS division and the "Greater Albania" adherents of the exceedingly brutal and repressive Stalinist-Maoist totalitarian dictatorship of the late Enver Hoxha in Albania?

defending their homes from the terrorist attacks of Alija Izetbegovic,

mujahideen (international Islamist terrorists first used in Afghanistan,
created by the US). Izetbegovic had been a Nazi in WWII and in the 1990s
he recreated the SS Handzar Division, which in WWII had been created by
Hajj Amin al Husseini out of thousands of Bosnian Muslim volunteers who
went around Yugoslavia murdering Serbs, Jews, and Roma (Gypsies). Hajj
Amin was also the former Mufti of Jerusalem before the war, from which
position he organized one terrorist riot after another against innocent
Jews with the help and encouragement of the British Mandate authorities.

For those who know history (an exceedingly small number of people), the
above is not surprising. In WWII, the Bosnian Muslims, the Croats, the
Slovenians, and the Albanians allied *en masse* with the invading German
Nazis and participated enthusiastically in the extermination of Serbs,
Jews, and Roma (Gypsies).

There are obviously mass graves in the outskirts of Srebrenica as in the rest of ex-Yugoslavia where combat has occurred, but there are no grounds for the campaign which was mounted, nor the numbers advanced by CNN."

"The mass graves are filled by a limited number of corpses from bothsides, the consequence of heated battle and combat and not the result of a premeditated plan of genocide, as occurred against the Serbian populations in Krajina, in the Summer of 1995, when the Croatian army implemented the mass murder of all Serbians found there. The Radical Islamic Character of the Sarajevo Regime

The evidence that the leadership of the ruling Party of Democratic Action (SDA), and consequently, the Sarajevo-based government, has long been motivated by the principles of radical Islam is inescapable. The following three profiles are instructive:

Alija Izetbegovic: Alija Izetbegovic, current Bosnian president and head of the SDA, in 1970 authored the radical "Islamic Declaration," which calls for "the Islamic movement" to start to take power as soon as it can overturn "the existing non-Muslim government . . . [and] build up a new Islamic one," to destroy non-Islamic institutions ("There can be neither peace nor coexistence between the Islamic religion and non-Islamic social institutions"), and to create an international federation of Islamic states. [The Islamic Declaration: A Programme for the Islamization of Muslims and the Muslim Peoples, Sarajevo, in English, 1990]

Izetbegovic's radical pro-Iran associations go back decades: "At the center of the Iranian system in Europe is Bosnia-Hercegovina's President, Alija Izetbegovic, . . . who is committed to the establishment of an Islamic Republic in Bosnia-Hercegovina." ["Iran's European Springboard?", House Republican Task Force on Terrorism and Unconventional Warfare, 9/1/92] The Task Force report further describes Izetbegovic's contacts with Iran and Libya in 1991, before the Bosnian war began; he is also noted as a "fundamentalist Muslim" and a member of the "Fedayeen of Islam" organization, an Iran-based radical group dating to the 1930s and which by the late 1960s had recognized the leadership of the Ayatollah Khomeini (then in exile from the Shah).

Following Khomeini's accession to power in 1979, Izetbegovic stepped-up his efforts to establish Islamic power in Bosnia and was jailed by the communists in 1983. Today, he is open and unapologetic about his links to Iran: "Perhaps the most telling detail of the [SDA's September 1, 1996] campaign rally . . . was the presence of the Iranian Ambassador and his Bosnian and Iranian bodyguards, who sat in the shadow of the huge birchwood platform. . . . As the only foreign diplomat [present], indeed the only foreigner traveling in the President's [i.e., Izetbegovic's] heavily guarded motorcade of bulky four-wheel drive jeeps, he lent a silent Islamic imprimatur to the event, one that many American and European supporters of the Bosnian Government are trying hard to ignore or dismiss." During the summer 1996 election campaign, the Iranians delivered to him, in two suitcases, $500,000 in cash; Izetbegovic "is now 'literally on their [i.e., the Iranians'] payroll,' according to a classified report based on the CIA's analysis of the issue." Bosnian muslim "warlord" Naser Oric, who went about murdering Serbs

Mr. Oric was protected by the West during his mass murder sprees and was never
brought to justice for his crimes of genocide. In fact after the signing of the
"Dayton Accords" in 1995 - after the US/NATO bombed the Bosnian Serbs into
submission - Mr. Oric was left to roam free and became the owner of a "night
club disco" [in reality also a brothel] in Tuzla! All of this was made possible
by neo-colonial Viceroy of Bosnia Herzegovina, "High Representative" Paddy
"Pants Down" Ashdown. Instead of Mr. Ashdown doing his job and bringing this mass murderer to justice, he was permitted to operate his "night club" for years before finally being arrested a couple of years ago on minor charges of "mistreating

Naser Oric boasted to these US & Canadian reporters that he went about on his
mass murder sprees by using "cold weapons" - knives,
hammers,axes,machetes,daggers,iron bars - against ENTIRE Serbian villages in
and around Srebrenica and Gorazde beginning in 1992 and finally ending in July
1995.

July 1995 is when the Bosnian Serb army re-took the area in a counter-offensive
where the Serbs were falsely accused of "executing 8,000 muslim men and boys".
An accusation used by the West to justify its racist,murderous policies against
the Serbs - the only group opposed to the Nazi and Islamo-Fascist Western
proxies hell bent on illegally forcing the disintegration of the Yugoslav
federation in violation of the Helsinki Accords and the UN Charter.

One of Mr. Oric's favourite sickening acts was to gouge out the eyes, tear the
tongues out,cut the ears off, slit the throats of, cut the noses,ears,and limbs
off, and then finally cut off the heads of children and the elderly in villages
surrounding Srebrenica and Gorazde.

In some cases entire families were either burned to death or murdered with
explosives, with Mr.Oric LAUGHING about it. He even boastfully laughed while
watching the videos of his mass murders, and then saying to the US and Canadian
reporters: "we launched those guys to the moon!"

Mr. Oric went about murdering entire villages - entire generations of families
were completely slaughtered - just as occurred in World War 2 - when well over
1 million Serbs,Jews,and Roma peoples were murdered by Croat, Muslim and
Albanian Nazis -750,000 of these victims were slaughtered in similar fashion to
today's methods in the WW2 Jasenovac death camp [these figures are from German
Nazi and French,British,Italian sources].

Instead of arresting this cold blooded killer, the UN command in 1992/1993,
under French General Phillipe Morillon, actually ASSISTED him to commit his
heinous crimes by requesting that Srebrenica be made a so-called "safe haven"
WITHOUT removing and disarming Naser Oric's 28th muslim army division,
commanded by Naser Oric and receiving instructions from alija Izetbegovic in
Sarajevo.

General Morillon's excuse for this was that he wanted to prevent the Bosnian
Serbs from committing "revenge" because he had seen - in his own words - the
"terrible crimes" committed by Naser Oric's troops.

'...In essence, Amb. Hays in a series of meetings he held with the Republica Srpska Prime Minister, Mladen Ivanic, in late August and early September 2003 in Banja Luka, the RS capital...'...Amb. Hays presented the [RS] Prime Minister with a document - on the letterhead of the Office of the High Representative (OHR) - which the Government of Republica Srpska was "advised" to accept as à fait accompli, in which three major points were made.

The content of the two-page document was to be re-issued by the Government of Republica Srpska, probably through the RS Office of Human Rights, as though it represented the RS "final report" on the Srebrenica issue."'...Amb. Hays’ two-page document was expected to lead to a statement, possibly as early as September 8, 2003, by RS officials, which would not only serve to protect the Clinton Administration officials, including the former US President, but would also serve as an admission of guilt of Serbs for killing thousands of Muslims who, in fact, were not known to have been killed.'

"Several hundred bodies have been found as a result of the fighting in and around Srebrenica, but the Islamists and their supporters have claimed figures which grow higher with each telling, with figures now claiming some 15,000 alleged deaths. At the same time, there is no acknowledgement of the Muslim killing of thousands of Serbs at Srebrenica earlier in the war, when the city was supposed to have been a 'demilitarized zone.'

"The document which Hays has been pushing essentially forces the RS Government to state that:

"1. Nothing is unclear in the Srebrenica investigation except the number of victims. In other words, the Islamist propaganda, supported by Ashdown - who has long been disavowed in the UK by his former colleagues in the Royal Marines because of his unequivocal acceptance of Islamist propaganda - is accepted as fact by the RS Government, thereby admitting guilt for crimes never committed;

"2. The RS apologizes to the Muslims for earlier RS statements which disputed the Islamist propaganda; and

"3. A new commission would be organized which would investigate further what happened at Srebrenica, despite the RS Government’s à priori acceptance - implicit in point one of the statement - of the alleged crime. This "commission" would include three individuals from RS (not necessarily selected by the RS Government), three from the "international community" and one from an unspecified non-governmental organization.'The Government of RS would have to pay for the work of the new "commission".

"Sources in Sarajevo, Belgrade and Washington have made it clear to GIS that the present US Bush Administration has been totally ignoring developments in the former Yugoslavia because of preoccupations with Iraq and the "war on terror", while former Clinton Administration appointees, actively supported by the George Soros Foundation - which has been avowedly anti-Serb and anti-Bush - have been able to compound their control of the area.

"Significantly, as numerous GIS reports have shown, the Iranian and al-Qaida/bin Laden terrorist infrastructure in Bosnia and Serbia-Montenegro has been increasingly active during 2003, preparing for a new breakout to draw US pressure away from Iran and al-Qaida activities elsewhere.

"It appeared that the OHR wanted the statement issued before the opening of a Muslim monument - essentially a shrine which was being promoted as a site for annual Muslim pilgrimages from around the world - memorializing the radical Islamist allegations about events in Srebrenica to occur on September 19, 2003. The unveiling of the monument would be attended by former US Pres. William Clinton, and "finalizing" the Srebrenica case would help stop the ongoing wave of allegations of illegal Clinton Administration activity in supporting radical Islamist activities in Bosnia during the 1990s.

"This is particularly critical given the fact that a significant number of the Islamist terrorists involved in the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on the United States had strong links into the Bosnian Muslims whom Clinton had supported.The US Embassy in Sarajevo donated $1-million to the construction of the "shrine", even though all proper investigations of the Srebrenica affair in fact showed the Islamists’ claims to be unsubstantiated and, in many respects, without foundation at all.'

"...Recent information emerging from Bosnia-Herzegovina, and particularly from the RS investigations into the Srebrenica affair and other aspects of terrorism in the region, have highlighted the fact that the Clinton Administration had, during the war, facilitated the Islamist terrorist activities because of the Clinton Administration’s need to demonize the Serbs in order to provide a casus belli for US-led military actions in the area to distract from domestic US political problems.

"Significantly, when the Muslim representatives involved in building the "shrine" in Srebrenica approached New York Mayor Michael Blumberg to establish a sister-city relationship with New York, the Mayor refused, based on intelligence showing the link between the Bosnian Islamists and the al-Qaida attacks on his city.

Croatian women and men, dear Croatian youth, Croatian soldiers, dear citizens of Knin, you who have survived here and who have returned and all your guests who have gathered here on this day - and we can accept what Croatian Army Knin commander Gen Ivan Cermak said: that we can call this the day when the Croatian historical cross has been completed.

Usually participants of historical events are not aware of the importance of the events which they take part in. What we have done today by bringing this Train of Freedom from Zagreb, the capital of all Croats, to Knin, the royal Croatian city, on the way to Split in the Croatian Dalmatia, the cradle of the Croatian statehood, this is not just the opening of a railway, this is not just the liberation of the occupied areas, but this is the laying of the foundations for an independent and sovereign Croatian state [Tudjman's voice becomes hoarse and he starts to bellow] from now on for the future centuries. [applause]

As long as they the Serbs were in Knin, as long as Knin was under occupation, the future of the Croatian state was not assured. Since Operation Storm, since today, it is. No one will ever be able to threaten it.

Knin was not just the capital of Croatian king Zvonimir, Knin was the capital of the kingdom of Croatia at the time when we did not have our own rulers from our own blood until 1522, when it was captured by the Turks and when those who were in our Croatian Knin until yesterday came together with them. And from today, this is Croatian Knin.

And [applause] there can be no return to the past, to the times when they the Serbs were spreading cancer in the heart of Croatia, cancer which was destroying the Croatian national being and which did not allow the Croatian people to be the master in its own house and did not allow Croatia to lead an independent and sovereign life under this wide, blue sky and within the world community of sovereign nations.

It is up to Croatian historians to explain today in this free and sovereign Croatia how it came about that Knin became a den of Chetnik anti-Croatianism. Knin, which - as I have said - was the capital of Croatia until 1522, Knin in which, until - despite the fact that the remaining population was given some sort of concessions from Turkish, Austrian and Hungarian times, and they multiplied. [sentence as heard] But nevertheless until the end of the World War I, the Croats formed the majority in Knin. At the time of the unification of Croatia with Serbia into the former Yugoslav community in 1918 , according to the 1910 census, there were 68 per cent of Croats and 32 per cent Orthodox Serbs in Knin. In 1991, there were just 14 per cent of Croats here in the heart of Croatia and 86 per cent Serbs. [applause]

It should be researched and explained to the Croatian people and the world why Knin became a Chetnik den and why they left not just Knin but also took everything with them connected with the idea of a Greater Serbia, the idea of joining Croatian areas to a Greater Serbian Yugoslavia or to a Greater Serbia itself. Maybe the younger generation does not know that in 1941, when the former Yugoslavia the kingdom of Yugoslavia disintegrated, a Knin outlaw name indistinct and priest Momcilo Djuric, compiled a list on behalf of 100 Serb intellectuals and on behalf of 100,000 Serbs and demanded, offered themselves to fascist Italy, so that fascist Italy should join this Knin Krajina and Dalmatia to Italy. [sentence as heard]

You are also not aware of the fact that when Croatian communists, and even those Serbs who were in the communist movement, started an anti-fascist struggle, that here in (?Odric) on 11th August 1941 those citizens of Knin whom I have mentioned, signed an agreement with Italians against the Independent State of Croatia pro-Nazi state and with fascist Italy to fight the Croatdom.

What has happened historically to make Knin become such an anti-Croatian place of horror, which prompted them to start a struggle against an independent and democratic Croatia in 1990, but which also brought about their ignominious disappearance from Knin and the region as though they had never lived here! [tumultuous applause]

In order to achieve this, dear Croatian brothers and sisters, we had to unite the disunited Croathood. We had to muster all Croatian wit and reject all Croatian stupidity. We had to create our own Croatian Army, our own armed force, with which we were capable of defeating the Serbs and convince and prove to the world that we are capable of preserving and ruling our country. [ sound of crowd cheering and shouting "Franjo" for 24 second]

Here in Knin they Serbs were creating their own Serb state in order to unify it with those Bosnian Serbs and Serbia proper and their Yugoslavia. Here in Knin they were saying that they had three Serb pine threes. Here in Knin they were preparing for a long-term war. They were printing their own money and then, owing to the strength of the Croatian Army, the wisdom of our decisions and our leadership, they disappeared in two to three days [applause for 12 seconds] . They didn't even have the time to take with them their filthy foreign currency or their knickers applause .

I have already said today that we paid a very high price, one billion Kunas Croatian currency , for Operation Storm, and before that for the Croatian summer of 95 in the Bosnian hinterland Grahovo and Glamoc in southwest Bosnia were captured by Croatian forces earlier this summer . I have also said that we seized their weapons and military equipment and all the other things we took from factories which are twice as valuable as this.

We should also say this: the liberation of Knin and central Croatian parts, from here to Sisak, they the Serbs were just 28 km away from Zagreb [applause, sentence as received]. We had to pay for it in blood. In this operation some 200 Croatian people lost their lives and over 1,000 Croatian soldiers and civilians were wounded. The Serbs did not just run away. They tried to put up a resistance and they suffered more than three times as many losses.

This also means that we will know how to value what we conquered at the price of Croatian blood and we shall never allow anyone to jeopardize our freedom, our democracy, our beautiful Croatian land in which there must be room not only for all Croatian people here, but also for all those expelled Croats whom I invited to return when I was speaking in Gospic.

It goes without saying that from fertile areas to all these parts we liberated there will be room for all our people, and our nation will celebrate its freedom and build its Croatia for which, since King Zvonimir 11th century , too many Croatian people died and too many of our sons suffered in the dungeons of Venice, Vienna, Budapest and Belgrade.

We knew what lessons to draw from our history in order to get to where we are now - freedom - which is truly the end of the Croatian crusade, as what remains to be done - Vukovar, the Croatian symbol applause , eastern Slavonia and Baranja – [continuing applause] are in the east of the Croatian country. The Croatian country is now stronger, not only stronger, but also fully consolidated following the liberation of Knin and central parts of Croatia. God willing, we shall liberate the remaining territory by peaceful means and without loss of life, with help from the international community. If this proves impossible, we shall use our force. [applause]

Dear Croatian brothers and sisters, I invite you to start on the revival of Knin, so we can populate it, and not just Knin, but also Benkovac, Obrovac and all the area up to the Plitvice lakes and Sisak . We must revive and build the whole of Croatia, so it can become a country of which every Croat can be proud, and all Croats can be from today, and a country of wealth and happiness of all Croatian people.

Everlasting glory to all the Croatian heroes and knights who gave their lives so that the Croatian flag can be hoisted on Zvonimir's fortress in Knin , so that Croatian future can be secured. Eternal life to our one and only Croatia. [applause]

"He then went on to speak of the "ignominious disappearance" of the Serbs from Krajina "so it is as if they have never lived here... They didn't even have time to take with them their filthy money or their filthy underwear!"
"American ambassador Peter Galbraith dismissed claims that Croatia had engaged in "ethnic cleansing," since he defined this term as something Serbs do."

According to what Reuters is insinuating, the Krajina Serbs [who lived there for more than three centuries BEFORE the founding of the US republic in 1776] really did not belong in Krajina at all, but illegally "occupied" that "part of Croatian territory" [yet another blatant Reuters historical falsehood from its early 1990's news-wire reports, repeated incessantly like some kind of Orwellian mantra: the fact of the matter is that Krajina was NEVER a constituent and integral part of Croatia prior to its recognition by the Vatican and Germany,followed by the acquiescent EC,in early 1992]

This disinformation and whitewashing of Tudjman's Ustasha Nazi ethnic cleansing/pogroms, and blatant genocide perpetrated against the Krajina Serbs serves one purpose: to cover up WESTERN COMPLICITY in the genocide - specifically, Clinton,Christopher and Galbraith giving Tudjman the "green light" to pepetrate such a horrendous act - along with the cover up of the crime by the Western Corporate controlled media [especially Reuters,ITN,BBC,CNN et al].

Srebrenica: an Appeal to Reason

G.M. Books of Los Angeles has just published and released Peter Brock’s powerful and devastating book which takes a very close and intimate look at the trees and the forest. Its title is Media Cleansing: Dirty Reporting – Journalism and Tragedy in Yugoslavia. While the major media in the U.S. and Western Europe continue to repeat endlessly that the “massacre of 8,000 Muslim men and BOYS by ‘the Serbs’ at Srebrenica” constitutes the only “case of ‘genocide’” in Europe since WWII, Brock shows that the claim is built like a house of cards. Poke SERIOUSLY at any angle and the claim collapses. The numbers are, to say the least, highly suspect. Actual findings, even years after l995, do not support them.

All kinds of researchers, in teams and individually, have arrived at a host of major doubts about this constantly repeated claim even before Brock’s new book. The context of the event alone, based on factual and verified information, exposes the claim as a methodical, structured and manipulative adjunct to an end or ends that have transcended an initial propaganda phase.

It managed to hide (a) that there was a civil war ongoing in Eastern Bosnia, involving the entire district of Srebrenica;

(b)that a SYSTEMATIC extermination and ethnic cleansing of near-by Serb villagers.---men, women and children-- had been going on even before Srebrenica became, by U.N. mandate, a “safety zone,” inhabited only by “unarmed civilians;”

(c) that this old silver-mining town was, in fact, used by well armed Bosnian Muslims, led by a warlord named Naser Oric, to liquidate all the near-by Serbs by terror and mayhem, DOCUMENTED BY ORIC HIMSELF;

(d)that Oric and up to about 5,000 of his men, forewarned from Sarajevo, fled to the Bosnian Muslim stronghold of Tuzla, days before the Bosnian Serb Army took Srebrenica ;

(e)that the allegation of “genocide” with which General Ratko Mladic is being charged, could not stand in any real court of law because he put the Muslim elderly, women and children of Srebrenica into buses and sent them to Tuzla, in sharp contrast to the real GENOCIDE carried out by Oric;

(f) that while Oric has been running a disco for U.S. G.I.s in Tuzla, under no indictment by the Hague “Tribunal” until recently (for “mistreating prisoners”) Mladic is wanted by it as a major “war criminal” for having committed “genocide” at Srebrenica;.

(g) that the U.S.under a NATO cosmetic umbrella had the command and put into action its preponderant personnel and weapons systems to wage a 78-day purely punitive air war against a defenseless Serbia, without the Congressional declaration of war mandated by the Constitution and causing over 3,000 civilian death plus a damage to Serbia’s infrastructure, governmental and private properties estimated at the low of $20 and high of $40 billion;.

(h)that the punishment exceeded by far the non-existent SERIE of “sins” into which “the Serbs” are being marched, with sticks and carrots, to accept “collective guilt” because some ethnic Serbs committed egregious crimes in an egregious tripartite fratricide heavily assisted via the classic “”Balkanization” by foreign powers of our own moment in time, some with an attested pedigree .in repetitive invasions, civilized savageries and undergoing an acute historical amnesia.

Given all that plus the latest and decidedly irrefutable work by Brock it is difficult to understand the unending flow of political venom against present-day Serbia from our powerful Solons who have inducted the U.S. Congress into additional, this time economic, threat of punishments if Mladic and Karadzic are not delivered by Serbia to the Hague Tribunal, by 31st May 2006. Since the International “Community” has constructed an international boundary between Serbia and Bosnia, Belgrade cannot send troops into Bosnia to “capture” Mladic. If foreign requests were to be put to Syria to deliver Bin Laden to the U.S. one could only laugh at them. But, the analogy is symmetric. It is also doubtful that Karadzic is still in any ex-Yugoslav space. This turns the demand to Serbia into either a “fait accompli” to punish since it cannot be met or, else, borders on the irrational..

This important and valuable book complements perfectly the superb volumes on Yugoslavia by Diana Johnstone (Fools’ Crusade) and Michael Mandel (How America Gets Away With Murder). Johnstone provides essential history and context to the Balkan wars, analyzing the indigenous participants, their backgrounds, motivations and strategies, and the very important role played there by external interveners (the Croatian and Bosnian Muslim diaspora and PR firms, Austria, Germany, the United States, and the UN and Yugoslavia Tribunal [ICTY]). Mandel provides an outstanding study of the recent U.S. aggressions and the role and abuse of international law and the ICTY in facilitating those aggressions. Brock focuses on the role of the media, which like the NATO powers and ICTY were “co-belligerents,” doing yeoman service in advancing the program of the individuals, groups and governments that wanted war. “Embedded” journalists did not start with the Iraq invasion-occupation; voluntary embeds were a dominant feature of the Western media in the Balkans conflicts.


The huge irony that Brock reveals so clearly is that the media co-belligerents, pushing relentlessly for more aggressive action, supposedly in the interests of stopping ethnic cleansing and killing, played into the hands of parties with a political agenda that assured and produced far more ethnic cleansing and killing than might have taken place without their bellicosity and war propaganda service. The same irony is clear in Johnstone’s and Mandel’s volumes that deal with the ends and means of the indigenous and external participants. The focus on “justice” as opposed to peace, and the demonizing of the Serbs and making them the unique group needing punishment, was the vehicle used by Bosnian Muslim leader Alija Izetbegovic and his close associates, and Clinton/Albright and Kohl-Genscher and their associates, to prevent a peaceful settlement--most importantly in backing out of the 1992 Lisbon Agreement--and to work incessantly to get NATO to intervene militarily on behalf, first, of Izetbegovic and the Bosnian Muslims and then the Kosovo Liberation Army and Kosovo Albanians. Brock shows that the media served these pro-violence and anti-peace ends relentlessly and effectively.


He argues convincingly that this was a model case of “pack journalism,” and also of what has been called “advocacy journalism” or “the journalism of attachment.” The journalists were quickly convinced that good was fighting evil, or that it was obligatory and less risky to take this as a given, and so they joined the pack and became advocates attached to the supposed good side and their victims. This was aided in the Balkans by the fact that most of the journalists didn’t know the language or history of the area, and that, because of the threat of bodily harm in trying to do real journalism, they tended to congregate in protected areas—many of them, as one cynical observer noted, only reported what they saw “150 meters on either side of the Holiday Inn” (General Lewis MacKenzie).

This made them dependent for “news” on one another and on the official sources happy to service their needs. As they stayed in the part of Sarajevo controlled by the Bosnian Muslims, they, along with U.S. officials, were the main sources of news, and as Brock notes they were hardly aware of the existence of a large Serb population in Sarajevo, some 50,000 of whose members left or were driven out of the city. The pack were even unaware of the exodus of the Jewish population of Sarajevo (pp. 131-3), quietly threatened by the dominant Muslims and recalling well (like the Serbs) the murderous behavior of the Muslims and Croats in the era of Nazi rule during World War II.


The pack journalists in Sarajevo (and elsewhere in the Balkans) were thus highly manageable, knowing the broader truth in advance, dispensing with notions of substantive objectivity and balance, and on the hunt for stories that would both confirm the institutionalized bias--and therefore please their editors at home--and advance the cause that they advocated and for which they campaigned. Journalists like David Rieff, Roy Gutman and Ed Vulliamy openly acknowledged that they were campaigners for more aggressive NATO intervention (i.e., war), and they were by no means alone. But this meant that they had ceased to be serious journalists who would check out the facts and claims of all sides and provide a full and fair picture of the complex events in the struggle. They would instead gravitate to stories that advanced the cause and would treat them with uncritical zeal. As another cynical observer described it, this meant that Izetbegovic “could play them like a Stradivarius,” and in effect use them as agents of Bosnian Muslim propaganda and disinformation. (The more “balanced” Roy Gutman was played like a Stradivarius by the Croatian information service and U.S. Embassy as well as Muslim authorities.)

This pack and bandwagon process fed on itself. As it focused only on the victimization of the Bosnian Muslims, featuring grim pictures and stories of their suffering, ignoring Serb victims and context, and aided by the parallel agenda and bias of the ICTY and Western political establishment, the party line of almost exclusively one-sided evil was steadily reinforced. (Former State Department official George Kenney’s research disclosed, however, that “the percentage of each population base killed was roughly identical,” and even an ICTY-sponsored study found Serb deaths not far below their proportion of the Bosnia-Herzegovina population--see Ewa Tabeau and Jacub Bijak, “War-related Deaths in the 1992–1995 Armed Conflicts in Bosnia and Herzegovina: A Critique of Previous Estimates and Recent Results,” European Journal of Population/Revue européenne de Démographie, June, 2005). Gullibility and the demand for more spectacular showings of evil encouraged increasingly irresponsible reporting and claims of victimization in “rape camps” and Auschwitz-like “death camps.” The books of these journalists would be what Brock calls “victim epics,” with politically correct selective victimization based largely on witness evidence supplied by partisan sources that was regrettably “unconfirmed.”


Brock has a detailed and convincing deconstruction of the claims of rape camps and rape as a Serb military tactic and exclusive (chapter 5). While certainly never denying Serb rapes, he shows that there is not the slightest evidence that Serb rapes were more numerous or organized than those of Bosnian Muslim or Croatian forces. He points out that the documentation of Serb rape victims is more extensive and of better quality than that of victims of Serbs, despite the sizable resources put into collecting evidence of the latter. The Serb data just never could attract the interest of the pack (and the same was true of the pack’s treatment of Serb dossiers of war crimes and prison camps in which Serbs were victims). The bias confused the media—Paul Lewis writing in the New York Times on “Rape Was Weapon of the Serbs” (Oct. 20, 1993) noted that a UN report had identified “800 victims by name,” but Lewis failed to mention that they were Serb women. The estimates of 50,000 or 20,000 rape victims of Serbs were based on no evidence whatsoever, and the belief that rape was a special Serb crime rested strictly on the overwhelming political bias of the pack and superior public relations and propaganda activity of the Croats and Bosnian Muslims. (A January 1994 UN report evaluating all the documentation on rapes, excluding evidence from the Serbs, listed 126 confirmed victims. This finding did not interest the media.)

The media role in this hysterical propaganda barrage, with the best of the reports noting that the claims are “unconfirmed” (!), was a scandal, reflecting a media completely out of control and justifying UN official Aracelly Santana’s comment that “I’ve never seen so much lack of professionalism and ethics in the press.” The UN representatives and British officials dealing with the media in Sarajevo looked upon the pack with contempt as a destructive force, some of them even calling its members “the reptiles.”


Brock also has a very good discussion of the famous photo of Fikret Alic, taken at the Trnopolje transit camp in August 1992, another fine illustration of the quest for denigration of the enemy and the lack of scruple of Western reporters and media. He shows that the three British reporters, two from Independent Television News (ITN) and one from the Guardian, sought out the uniquely emaciated man among the camp residents, and carefully arranged for a photo that made it look as if Alic was enclosed in a fenced prison, the reporters having deliberately placed themselves behind four strands of rusted and sagging barbed wire, strung haphazardly between two posts, with a thin chicken wire mesh hanging beneath, with Alic on the other side. “The cameramen and layout editors cropped the photos of Alic so that the three or four strands of barbed wire were emphasized.” There was no barbed wire fence around the camp, which was a transit facility and not even a prison encampment, and the refugees in the camp were even free to leave.


But the Fikret Alic picture was quickly seized upon by the Western media, and juxtaposed with pictures of Belsen and Auschwitz, and the media featured this “death camp” with frenzied indignation and thoroughgoing dishonesty. Compelling evidence by Thomas Deichmann that the photo was a propaganda fraud led to a journalistic bloodbath: “The reactionary attacks from pack-journalism’s interventionists commenced with fury and gusto,” and led to a libel suit and bankruptcy of the British magazine Living Marxism that had published Deichmann’s article. The suit was lost by Living Marxism not on the ground that the facts in the article were wrong but rather that it had not been proved that there was an intent to deceive—the huge deception, which happened to fit both the biases of the reporters, editors and Western establishment, was inadvertent!


This deceptive photo worked wonders in advancing the demonization process and war agenda, and though based on serious misrepresentation it was not correctible in the mainstream and remains alive today (in Emma Brockes’ recent attack on Noam Chomsky in The Guardian she mentions that ITN won its libel suit on this topic, but she failed to note that it was won on the question of intent, not on the question of whether the facts relating to the photo were misleading). And the pack journalists would provide a steady stream of followup negatives, always one-sided and stripped of context, and often falsifications. Brock has a number of pages that simply list misrepresentations, sometimes photos of victims identified as Muslims but actually Serbs (see pp. 30-32, 122-4, 170-2), and dozens of illustrations of blatant bias are scattered throughout the book. Brock also shows how regularly the pack journalists would report on Serb attacks on various towns—e.g., Goradze, Mostar, Bihac, Vukovar, and Struga—never mentioning either the fact that the towns had previously been ethnically cleansed of Serbs, or that the Serbs were retaliating for recent attacks emanating from these towns. The decontextualization and misreading of the recent sequence of events was standard reportorial operating practice, resting on bias plus uncritical dependence on Bosnian Muslim or Croat sources. (On lies regarding the Serb attack on Goradze, pp. 75-76; on Vukovar, pp. xiii-xv; on the remarkable effectiveness of Croat propaganda and lack of integrity of AP and other Western sources at Struga, pp. 42-45; on Michael Gordon’s lies on the numbers in Serb concentration camps, pp. 80-81).


Brock notes that there were dissenters from party line pack journalism, but he shows that these were quickly attacked and marginalized, in a familiar process. This is the “media cleansing,” that permitted the triumph of “dirty reporting.” Brock himself, having written an article critical of the already closed party line media coverage back in 1993 (“Dateline Yugoslavia: The Partisan Press,” Foreign Policy, Winter 1993-1994), was harshly assailed by members of the pack, and the publisher of his article was also put under pressure and threatened for this deviationism. George Kenney, a former State Department official working on the Balkans, who had quit because of insufficient U.S. intervention in the ongoing wars, changed his views and became a serious critic of the party line. Kenney, like Brock, was quickly subjected to nasty attacks and dropped by the BBC and U.S. mainstream media as a commentator on the Balkans struggle. Even Lt. General Michael Rose, the UNPROFOR commander in Sarajevo, was subjected to slashing attacks by pack members, who resented his frequent confutations of pack disinformation, and who, as campaigners for the Bosnian Muslims, were angry at the failure of UNPROFOR to bomb the Serbs (see Brock’s crushing analysis of Peter Jennings’ biased, ignorant and nasty attack on Rose--“The Peacekeepers—How the UN Failed in Bosnia,” ABC, April 24, 1995, at pp. 175-6; and on Jennings’ and ABC’s journalistic abuses more broadly, p. 173 ).

Perhaps the most interesting case was that of David Binder, who writes a Foreword to Brock’s book under review here, and who was the most experienced and knowledgeable New York Times reporter working in the Balkans in the 1980s and 1990s. Binder, however, was not a party liner, having witnessed and reported on the Kosovo Albanians attempts to drive Serbs out of Kosovo in the 1980s and who recognized that important elements of that community were striving for ethnic purification. But with the firming up of the party line in the 1990s his insistence on sometimes reporting items putting the Bosnian Muslims or Kosovo Albanians in a bad light was looked upon with disfavor by his editors. In one notorious case discussed by Brock, Binder wrote an article based on the testimony of numerous qualified UN and military insiders that pointed to the Bosnian Muslims as the source of the bomb that killed mainly Bosnian Muslim civilians in Sarajevo in the Markale market bombing of February 5, 1994, but which helped sell more aggressive NATO actions against the Serbs. The Times refused to publish the article, which forced Binder to resort to a Swiss newspaper, Die Weltwoche and the journal Foreign Policy (“Anatomy of a Massacre,” Winter 1994-95).


Eventually Binder was removed from reporting on the Balkans in favor of reporters like Roger Cohen, Carlotta Gall, Marlise Simons, and John F. Burns, who were prepared to toe the party line--and sometimes disseminated lies, but only lies that reinforced the party line and its biases (see the discussion of John F. Burns below). The treatment of Binder was reminiscent of the removal of Raymond Bonner from reporting on Central America in the 1980s, after Bonner failed to stop sending in copy on the murderous operations of the U.S.-supported Salvadoran army. The firing of Bonner was widely seen as a warning to journalist deviationists; the removal of Binder and the attacks on Brock and Kenney had a similar chilling effect.


Under the pack system, and with the triumph of the demonization process and simple Manichean world view of the struggle, there was a massive voluntary embedding and collapse of journalistic standards. The rush was on to illustrate villainy at all costs, a process also notorious at the end of the Kosovo war in June 1999 when NATO-country pack journalists rushed into Kosovo searching for rape victims, dead bodies, and stories of Serb atrocities. In this environment journalistic fraud flourishes and gullibility is great, making the journalists sitting ducks for interested propagandists. If Bosnian Muslim officials claimed 200,000 Bosnian Muslim victims in 1992-1993, that was swallowed uncritically by the media (and Clinton) despite implausibility, inconsistencies, and doubts expressed by the likes of George Kenney. This figure persists up to today--see the editorials “Bosnia, 10 Years Later” in the New York Times, Nov. 25, 2005 and “Bosnia’s Slow Progress,” Washington Post, Nov. 29--despite repudiation even by ICTY-sponsored sources, which have lowered the number for deaths on all sides, civilian and military, to something like 100,000. (See the Tabeau/Biljac study cited earlier.) We may recall the history of the figure of 2 million murdered by the Khmer Rouge in Cambodia, first provided by Jean Lacouture in early 1977, then acknowledged by him to have been created out of the whole cloth, but accepted and persisting up to today. The rule for demonized enemies is that the worst is believable and can be institutionalized even if demonstrably fraudulent.


Brock shows that it was a regular practice for the media to swallow and transmit without verification Bosnian Muslim official and even ham radio station claims of deaths in various battle zones. These were almost always inflated or entirely false, but the media took the bait, and while disappointed to find later that they had been gulled, neither issued corrections nor learned to be cautious. There were no real costs for the journalists or media in making errors damaging to the demonized enemy


Brock is at his best in analyzing the work of John F. Burns of the New York Times and Roy Gutman of Newsday, who shared the 1993 Pulitzer Prize for journalism for their work in Bosnia. Brock shows that this award is a perfect manifestation of the corruption of the “journalism of attachment” and of the Pulitzer award system, which is an index of the corruption of journalism more broadly. The Burns case is the more dramatic, and even funny, as Burns got the award based in large part on a long Times article that focused on the confession of a Bosnian Serb prisoner of the Muslims, Borislav Herak, who confessed to having murdered 29 Muslims and raped eight women. Burns’s article was billed as offering “insight into the way thousands of others have died in Bosnia.”

Burns, who was well-known at the time to be an Izetbegovic favorite, had been given quick access to Herak, along with a Soros-funded movie-maker (whose presence at the interrogation was never acknowledged in the Burns report). Herak appeared very frightened, told his story to Burns “partly in the presence of prison officials,” and after one session asked Burns to get the prison authorities to promise not to beat him after his testimony! There was no corroborating evidence in corpses or eyewitnesses to his alleged crimes, and a fellow Bosnian Serb arrested with Herak had said right away that Herak was lying. Both Burns and the movie-maker suppressed the fact that Herak had accused UNPROFOR head, Canadian General Lewis MacKenzie, of having raped Bosnian women in a local bordello. Burns acknowledged to MacKenzie that this would reduce Herak’s credibility and spoil the story, but he suppressed the information in violation of professional standards and in support of lies that he should have known were lies.


Several years later Herak recanted, claiming that he had been tortured and forced to memorize his confession lines. Shortly after this admission two of his alleged murder victims turned up alive. The Times, in reporting on the appearance of the two supposed Herak victims, said that this was an embarrassment to the Bosnian Muslim government, but it found nothing embarrassing in the incident to the New York Times, and there has been no move by the Pulitzer award committee to remove Burns’ Pulitzer award based on a confession under torture with compromising evidence suppressed.


Brock has quite a few other illustrations of Burns’ violations of journalistic ethics. Burns pioneered in alleging 200,000 Muslim deaths in the warfare as early as July 1993, up from his estimate in April of 140,000; and, “venturing less and less outside Sarajevo, [Burns] consistently reported the government’s inflated casualty counts during the war.” On the MacNeil-Lehrer News Hour (Jan. 10, 1994) Burns upped the ante to 300,000 killed and 900,000 wounded. (For other Burns lies, misrepresentations and suppressions of evidence, pp. 77-80, 187.)


Brock’s analysis of the work of Roy Gutman is equally devastating. He shows compellingly that Gutman was not A Witness to Genocide (the title of Gutman 1993 book based on his dispatches from Bosnia), but rather an agent of propaganda provided, directly or indirectly, by parties with an axe to grind. Many of his sources were not witnesses but purveyors of hearsay evidence from alleged witnesses. Gutman treated his sources uncritically; even speaking at one point of “reliable rumors.” He rarely demanded--and even more rarely obtained and supplied--any corroboration to allegations of Serb abuse. If the Bosnian Muslims and Croats claimed 100,000 prisoners in Serb prison camps that was enough for Gutman; the fact that the Red Cross estimated that there were only some 10,000 prisoners in the camps of the Serbs, Croats and Bosnian Muslims taken together was of no interest to him; their finding meant that his preferred larger number was “unconfirmed.” His business was making the case against the bad guys, and he didn’t just cut corners in making that case, with the help of his badly compromised sources he wrote works of fiction that had some “unconfirmed” elements of reality.

Gutman located most of his sources with the help of Croatian, Bosnian Muslim and U.S. Embassy intermediaries, most extensively from the Croatian Information Center (CIC), a government propaganda agency whose work Gutman found to be “more or less scholarly.” Gutman claimed to have met a major propaganda agent of the CIC, and Gutman source, Jadranka Cigelj, “by chance,” but he admits to having gotten a number of witnesses (or purveyors of witness hearsay) from Croatian “charitable foundations” and the U.S. embassy. As one critical journalist (Joan Phillips) put it, his death camp stories “are based on very few accounts from alleged survivors. They rely on hearsay and double hearsay. They are given the stamp of authority by speculation and surmise from officials.”


Gutman was very free in using analogies to Belsen, Auschwitz and references to “death camps” and “concentration camps,” “deportations,” and estimates of Serb death camp killings running up to 5,000, although his word usage and numbers varied based on probable audience knowledge and receptivity. The lack of scruple here was marked, and misstatements were frequent. “It was like Jews being deported to Auschwitz” was a lie, as there was no evidence whatsoever that Bosnian Muslims moved around by the Serbs were going to gas chambers. Phillips notes that the 350 journalists who rushed into Bosnia looking for death camps “didn’t find them, nor did they find any evidence that they existed.” There was in fact never any evidence that treatment in the Bosnian Serb camps was any worse than that in the Croatian and Bosnian Muslim camps, that were of no interest to Gutman.


Brock’s detailed analysis of Gutman’s work (pp. 87-116) is a compelling study in journalistic malpractice that should by read by every student of the media, especially given the fact that the outrageous performance that Brock describes here resulted in a Pulitzer prize, shared by Gutman’s rival in disinformation John F. Burns! Gutman didn’t relish any analysis by Brock, warning him by e-mail that his Witness to Genocide could “not be quoted under any circumstances.” He didn’t even relish exposure at the Hague, refusing to testify there, where he would have had to deal with cross-examination.


Brock’s book has many other good things in it, like a discussion of the role of George Soros, public relations firms, Germany, the Vatican, and of course the Tribunal as an instrument of NATO. It is a very important work filling a needed gap in the critical literature on the Balkans wars and enlightening on the work of the mainstream media. It is a sad commentary on the intellectual culture that this book, like that of Johnstone and Mandel, which contests an institutionalized party line, will be ignored in the mainstream.

Equally troubling, just as neither Johnstone nor Mandel was reviewed in the supposedly “left” Nation, In These Times, Progressive, and Mother Jones, there is a good chance that Brock will join them in being bypassed in favor of less “controversial” works. This is a testimonial to the ability of imperialism to make an official party line on an imperial project unchallengeable even on its purported left. This is hegemony at its finest.
